Images and Text in Chinese Painting (3) The relationship between texts and images assumes primary significance in Chinese painting. Many Chinese paintings in the pre-modern period resonate with centuries of poetic writing or are meant to be associated with literary references. This course examines a range of issues concerning the relationship of texts to pictures, such as facilitating narratives in painting, practices of writing on painting (inscriptions), poetic allusions, and modes of illustration in specific pictorial formats and genres. Topics include: commemorative images of historical stories, illustrations accompanying literary accounts, images of commoners' life episodes, poetic paintings, and Buddhist narratives. Students are expected to develop analytical skills with a focus on general picture/text relatinoships, while learning to grasp the nuanced commonalities of Chinese pictorial and literary tradition. No prior knowledge of Chinese is assumed for this class.
