Human Interaction in Social Media (3) This course marshals both qualitative and quantitative studies of human interaction on social media, investigating how human interaction is being deeply shaped by social media use. The course will thus focus on three generalizations: (1) how social media influence human interaction with others, (2) how social media influece information processing, (3) how to use semantic analysis software such as Tropes, AntConc, General Inquirer to analyze information flows on various social media platforms. Ethnography in Communication Research (3) This course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of the intellectual history and major concepts, premises, theoretical approaches, analytical techniques and methodologies germane to the study of ethnography as a form of qualitative research. Concurrently, the students will engage the praxis of fieldwork during the course, allowing us to personally/ collectively explore what it means to define/investigate/understand "the Field" in all its permutations and consider ethnographic engagement as it occurs across its wider contemporary spectrum ranging from traditional approaches to evolving methodologies related to understanding emerging communications technologies. Finally, the challenges, perspectives, roles, and ethical implications related to the "research" will be a central motif.
