STABR 999A (IL) Separation of Powers - Florence PRG (1) This course will examine the federal doctrine of Separation of Powers, as applied in opinions of the United States Supreme Court. Subjects, covered will include appointment and removal of federal officers, unconstitutional delegation of legislative powers, the legislative veto, standing to sue, and proper attributes of the judicial power. The assigned readings will include brief excerpts from The Federalist and from Tocqueville's Democracy in America. Throughout the course, comparisons will be made to the treatment of similar issues in foreign countries, particularly the countries of the European Union.

STABR 999B (IL) Comparative Law in a Globalized World - Transnational Perspectives - Florence PRG (2.5) This course addresses selcted topics that are important for U.S. lawyers in transnational practice. It introduces students to the civil law tradition and contemporary national and supranational legal systems in Europe and around the world that have grown out of or have been substantially influenced by the civil law tradition.

STABR 999C (IL) International and Comparative Family Law - Florence PRG (2.5) This course will present an overview of the family law systems in the United States and European countries with emphasis on Italy. The course will also focus on transnational family law problems involving recognition of foreign decrees, transnational custody battles, international adoptions etc. The course will combine theoretical and practical approaches. No prior knowledge of family law is required, and the course is not intended to be a substitute for an in depth U.S. family law course.

STABR 999D (IL) International Arbitration - Florence PRG (2.5) Because international arbitration has become a common method for resolving transnational business disputes, an understanding of arbitration enhances a lawyer's ability to work in international contexts. This course will facilitate understanding this important area of law.

STABR 999E (IL) Transnational Litigation and Civil Procedure - Florence PRG (2.5) This course explores the problems that most frequently arise in litigation involving foreign parties or business transactions. It initially focuses on judicial jurisdiction and related questions of forum non conveniens, validity and enforceability of forum selection clauses, antisuit- injunctions and international lis pendens. It then concentrates on the intricacies of serving process in transnational cases, and provisional remedies (injunctions, attachment and equivalent remedies) in litigation involving foreign parties or activies. The discovery process in transnational disputes and recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments are also addressed.
